A Good Man is Hard to Find

"A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Conor can be interpreted in many different ways.  O'Connor herself said that there were other ways, other than her own, in which the story could be read.  Is it necessary to disect O'connor's story then to find a more substantial meaning?  Does there have to be a reasonable explanation as to why O'Connor wrote such a disturbing story?  To me, it seems clear that too much time is wasted on over-analyzing each character, plot, setting, and physical description.  By doing this, it is easy to overlook what appears right in front of the reader.  It is my understanding that our heroine, the Grandmother, hired the Misfit to do away with her family for the lack of respect they showed her; therefore, bestowing upon her a sense of worthlessness, aggravation, and feelings of regret.

On the following pages, I will demonstate the ideas behind my theory so that you too will be able to interpret "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by using all of the information that is provided for you.

Throughout a lifetime filled with personal hardships, it is clear that Flannery O'Connor transfered her sadness and separation from the world into the character of the Grandmother.
